V2 ROCKET AT CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY AT GROENPLAATS IN ANTWERP, BELGIUM - 1945

Near mint postcard with minor crease at right bottom (see photo).

V2 produced by prisoners in Mittelbau-Dora, a concentration camp near Nordhausen (outer camp of Buchenwald).
Launched by the Germans between November 19, 1944 and March 8, 1945, 1,664 rockets were fired at Belgium.

Although Antwerp was already liberated 04 September 1944 mans 1,610 V2 rockets fell down in Antwerp.
Antwerp was considerably damaged: the Teniersplein took a hit twice within three weeks: 724 people were killed.
On December 16th 1944 the Rex cinema was hit where 566 people perished.

Although there were members of Allied military personnel among the victims, the strategic target (closing down the harbour) was not achieved because the V2 rocket was very inaccurate.
The launching of the V2 weapons caused the death of 3,515 people in the district of Antwerp with 5,824 people were seriously injured and 50 people missing.
3,118 buildings were completely destroye, 27,616 were heavily damaged and 67,659 suffered minor damage.
