Aesthetic Era Haviland Limoges Ladies Oyster Plate c. 1880 Ladies' four well footed oyster plate. The four well ladies' plates are more rare and harder to find than other plates with more numerous wells.

On the back of both plates is a circular mark: "Haviland & Co. Limoges." One plate has a black H&Co. with a line and “L” underneath. This mark dates between 1879 and 1889. The second mark on the other plate is a green "H & Co." with a line and "Depose" underneath. This latter mark was used only one year, 1887, so that's the exact year the second plate was made.

The plates feature an asymmetric floral design around the four wells. This asymmetry was a characteristic of the Aesthetic Period in which the artistic was prized for its beauty, a reaction against the Industrial Age. The floral decoration is in various shades of red and yellow with light brown and sage green foliage. The wells show light pink muscle scars and are outlined in brown.

Please see my other listings. I have another identical pair of these oyster plates listed at this time.
