They couldn't keep up with production using their traditional paint and varnish process, which was time-consuming. As a solution, they introduced a new, quicker method: covering the guitars in imitation leather.

This temporary measure allowed them to meet the surging demand, but it also led to a unique and rare era in guitar production. Guitars from this period, like the Höfner 172, are prized as relics of a time when the world was entranced by the sounds of not only the Beatles but also other legendary artists like The Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison, The Shadows, and Johnny Hallyday.
