Condition: Lot of 2 antique 19th century folk art black character dolls from Uncle Tom’s Cabin. These hand made dolls are Uncle Tom and the young Topsy characters. They are made of clay over wood. Their clothing is hand sewn from scraps of fabric. Uncle Tom's hair is made from steel wool, and there are areas of loss. The clay on both dolls has chipped and split in numerous places, especially hands and feet. The bodies are stuffed cloth. The upper arms are cloth. Topsy's dress has significant staining, and disintegration of the fabric. There are tears throughout the dress. Her legs are attached to the body with machine stitches. Uncle Tom's jacket is made of wool and there are holes in the fabric. His vest has bead buttons. The lapels of his vest are mis-shapen. His shirt has staining. Uncle Tom measures 12" tall and Topsy measures 10".
