The Queen of the comic monologue in her prime performing her most cherished sketches and songs Joyce Grenfell was an institution, Queen of the comic monologue and an acclaimed performer on stage, radio and television. These TV shows, broadcast in 1964 and 1972, bear witness to her unique talent with a selection of hilarious songs, monologues and sketches from her one woman show.

Joined as ever by her friend William Blezard on piano, Joyce performs all her well loved and memorable favourites including the inimitable Lumpy Latimer in the Old Girl's School Reunion, Mrs Fanshawe who glides stately as a galleon across the dancefloor, three lady choristers making a joyful noise in the Royal Albert Hall and of course, Young George, whose unspeakable and mysterious activities in The Nursury School produced the now famous catchphrase 'George, don't do that!'

CUSTOMER REVIEW

What shines through her every gesture is her love of people, her warmth and her positive view of humanity. She focuses on a narrow range of types and touched the characters with whimsy and gentle grace. She brings to mind a touch of what I see as an intrinsically English view of life.
she has a lovely voice and a calm happy manner.
She stands alone in the shows with almost no props. You can imagine her going anywhere to do this, in any circumstances - reminding the troops overseas what they were fighting for, the right to enjoy living your own life according to your own lights.
I imagine many would think her twee. Certainly the England/US she depicts has gone forever, but it is good to be reminded of lost glories.

What hours of pleasure this lady gave us down the years and still able to do so, as fresh as ever today. As a performer myself, one understands how difficult it is to stand before an Audience and remember everything. Joyce had to perform into a Camera which is a lot more difficult  as you cannot see your Audience, and therefore cannot judge whether or not your act was pleasing. Her Film roles as Miss Gossage was a gem,as were all the others.A LOVELY, LOVELY, LADY who can still cheer you up with her smiles ! !

If you love classy humour, immaculately delivered, then this DVD is definitely for you!

Joyce Grenfell has long been a favourite performer of mine - ever since I first heard the Primary School Teacher sketch on Radio when I was a young boy.

She was an accomplished Writer and Performer, and had such elegance and class that she truly deserved the epithet "funny lady".
