Document Signed: "Anne R" as Queen of England, 1p, 9x13¼. Our Court at St. James's, 1709 February 2. To Sidney Earle of Godolphin, Our High Treasurer of Great Britain. Countersigned: "Godolphin". Order to pay Sir William Farakerley, Knight Chamberlaine of Our City of London, the Sum of One Thousand Pounds "towards the releife and Support of Our Poor Subjects inhabiting within the parishes in and about the said City as of Our Charity and Benevolence to them…." QUEEN ANNE (1665-1714) was the second daughter of King James II and Anne Hyde. During her formative years, she sat in the middle of the struggle between the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church: her father James II was Roman Catholic, while her uncle Charles II was Anglican. She supported the accession of William and Mary in 1689 and was placed in succession. In 1701, she signed the Act of Settlement that designated Hanoverian descendants of James I as her successor. When Anne died in 1714, she was succeeded by King George I. SIDNEY GODOLPHIN, 1st Earl of Godolphin, was Lord of the Treasury in 1679, later becoming Lord High Treasurer of England (1700-1701, 1702-1710). Lightly soiled and stained. Folds, not at signatures.
