Autograph Letter Signed: "Henry Wilson", 1p, 7¾x9¾. Natick, 1854 February 21. To George Turner. In full: "Your note has just come to hand and in reply I have to say that I will Lecture in your place on Thursday evening March 2nd." Henry Wilson (1812-1875) was a Massachusetts shoemaker - hence his nickname, "the Natick Cobbler" - and an anti-slavery activist who entered the US Senate in 1855 with the Free Soil Party. In 1859 he was re-elected as a Republican, serving in the Senate until 1873, when he began his tenure as Vice President during Grant's second term. During the Civil War, Wilson raised and led a regiment of volunteers. Wilson died in office, in the Capitol building.. Folds, vertical fold touches "H" in Henry. Creased. 1½-inch separation at lower blank vertical fold (all intact). Tape remnants at edge of verso (no show through). 3 minor stains in blank margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
