This is a Japanese Shunga pillow book. It concertinas out to reveal a series of vintage Japanese explicit pictures.

Shunga, literally “spring pictures”,  it is an erotic artistic tradition that emerged from early modern Japan, featuring graphic images of sexual activity.

The Japanese influences of shunga date back to the Heian period (794 to 1185). At this point, it was found among the courtier class. Through the medium of narrative handscrolls, sexual scandals from the imperial court or the monasteries were depicted, and the characters tended to be limited to courtiers and monks.

This book dates to the late 19th or early 20th century, but we cannot be certain of when, hence we have described it as vintage rather than antique.

It is in very good condition overall with slight signs of age & wear (see photos). The concertina folds are in good order, as are the prints and front & back cover.
