SYNOPSIS ....

Grandad's Gifts is a picture book for primary-school aged kids (especially if they like Gary Crew's scary picture storybooks). It was written by Paul Jennings, originally as part of "UNbearable!"  in 1990 -  but Paul re-released it as a stand alone picture storybook  and had Peter Gouldthorpe's illustrations added - which are amazing.

There's a secret cupboard, a creepy voice, and an incredibly weird fox. Shane discovers Grandad's Gifts .....

'I walked over to the forbidden cupboard and gave the handle a shake. It was locked firm. I put my eye to the keyhole but everything was black. I sniffed under the gap at the bottom of the door. It was musty and dusty. Something silent inside seemed to call me.

'It was almost as if a gentle voice was stirring the shadows of years gone by. The stillness seemed to echo my name, "Shane, Shane, Shane...
"'

This is a chilling picture book with a twist in the tail, as Paul slowly brings a fox back to life by feeding its fur with lemons from the tree above its grave. But it's the lemons above Paul's grandfather's grave that give the fox its final gift, sight...

This is a chilling story with appropriately eerie illustrations. Shane opens the door of Grandfather's forbidden cupboard to find a fox fur from an animal shot by his Grandfather many years before. By feeding the fur with lemons from a tree above the fox's grave, Shane brings the animal slowly back to life. But it is the lemons from the tree over his Grandfather's grave which give the fox its final gift, sight.... A macabre twist in a compelling tale.

This spooky story, with the twist in the tail that Paul Jennings is famous for, is vividly brought to life by Peter Gouldthorpe's powerful, haunting illustrations.
