What are egg plant seeds?

Solanum melongena grows widely in India as well as in Sri Lanka. The fruit is cooked as a vegetable and its oil extract as well as the leaves are used to treat various ailments and diseases. Eggplant roots contain a nutrient called solanine.

Medicinal uses:

It is used to treat dysuria, cough, flatulence, measles and abscesses and is also considered as an analgesic herb.

Home Remedies:

Swelling : Fried pulp of eggplant. Allow it to cool and apply around the affected area.

Cough:

Make a paste of whole green brinjal plant and consume it with hot milk.

How to plant eggplant?

Place the plants immediately (only an inch or two from the plant) to provide support as the plants rise and not disturb the soil later.

If you live in a cold climate, consider using row covers to keep the eggplant warm and sheltered. Open the ends of the row covers on hot days to allow bees to pollinate.

If transplanting, plant 3- to 4-inch-tall seedlings 2 to 2½ feet apart in rows 3 to 4 feet apart.

Water well after planting. Add a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Grow eggplants in full sun.

Eggplants grow best in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Before planting, add aged compost or commercial organic potting mix to the planting beds and turn the soil to a depth of 12 inches (30cm).

Eggplant prefers a soil pH of 5.5 to 6.8.

Warm the soil before planting by placing black plastic over the planting beds for two weeks.
