Elizabeth Gaskell: Cranford

'Cranford' is a popular novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell, which was originally published in instalments in Charles Dickens' 'Household Words'. It isn't a plot-driven book,mainly relying on satirical sketches of small town customs in Victorian England.

Gaskell was one of the most popular female writers of her time, also writing 'Mary Barton', 'North and South', and 'Wives and Daughters'. She was good friends with Charlotte Bronte, writing a biography about her after her death.

Illustrated by Hugh Thomson, an Irish illustrator who illustrated editions of books by Oliver Goldsmith, Charles Dickens, and Jane Austen.

With numerous monochrome in-text illustrations throughout.

In the original publisher's cloth binding with gilt decoration to the front board and to the spine. Minor shelfwear to the boards. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Firmly bound. Pages are bright and with just the odd scattered spots.
