Julia MacFarland (1902 - ) received her BA degree in Painting from the University of Washington in 1951 and her MFA degree in Painting in 1952. The University of California at Los Angeles granted her a BA degree in Zoology, and Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, granted her a Master’s degree in Sociology.


She has been a resident of Seattle, Washington, since 1941. In downtown Seattle she has maintained a studio since 1952. Her present studio is located at 1516 Second Avenue, in the Columbia Building.


Her work has been exhibited at the Seattle Art Museum in the Northwest Annual in 1953, 1956, 1959, 1961, 1968, and in the Northwest Watercolor Exhibitions at the Seattle Art Museum in 1958, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1971; the Frye Museum West Coast Oil Painting shows, 1961, 1962, 1963; and the Puget Sound Area Exhibitions, 1963 and 1971. Other juried exhibitions include the Woessner Gallery; Pacific Northwest Arts and Crafts, Bellevue, Washington; State Capitol Museum, Olympia, Washington; and Religious Painting Exhibition, Seattle University. Also, as a regular contributor since 1963, she has been represented in invitational shows, including the Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington; Summer Salon, Unitarian Fine Arts Gallery; Utley Gallery; Attica Gallery; Little Gallery, Frederick and Nelson’s; and Paneca Gallery, Bellevue, Washington.


She has received several awards that include Second Award in Oil, Women Painters of Washington 1958; Tacoma Art League Award in Oil 1959; Western Washington Fair, First Award Christmas Card Design, Lambda Rho Alumnae 1960; Honorable Mention Watercolor, Creative Arts Festival, Renton, Washington 1962; First Prize Watercolor, Christmas Art Show, State Capitol Museum, Olympia, Washington; Second Award, Drawing, Women Painters of Washington 1965; First Award in Watercolor, Women Painters of Washington 1963, 1967, 1968; Honorable Mention, Madonna Festival, Spokane, Washington 1968; Honorable Mention Watercolor, Art for Collectors Sale, Lambda Rho Alumnae Association, Henry Gallery 1969.


She was member and past president 1955, 1956 of Lambda Rho Women’s Art Honorary, University of Washington; member of Women Painters of Washington; and member of Artist Equity Association, Inc., in which organization she served as a member of the Board of Directors in 1961 and 1962.
