Kinji was born the second son of Ogawa Bunzai IV. The lineage started in 1809 with the first Bunzai, who was born in Wakasugi Village, Kaga Province. Bunzai I traveled extensively across Japan, studying the various styles and techniques of making pottery. age of 30, he was requested to make a kiln in Osaka. A few years later, he moved to work in Kyoto. At age 36, he was granted permission to build a kiln in the wealthy merchant district. Kyoto lineage that continues to this day with the work of his descendant, Ogawa Bunzai VI.
