Welcome to Paradise Bound!

The son of a successful fish merchant from the old Tango province in northern Kyoto on the Sea of Japan, Wada-san was a student of the great Kishi Ganku. He was a renowned master of painting dragons and tigers and was highly skilled at all of the other ancient, traditional subject matter for literati painters. One of his largest pieces, a dragon, which rests in Keio-ji Temple can be seen here: (https://gipsypapa.exblog.jp/24121394/). The signature of the dragon and some of his "fusuma" (sliding doors) can be seen here: (http://machinaka.sakura.ne.jp/guide-osusume.html). Not having a determined date of death suggests that he may have passed during the chaotic turmoil of the Bakumatsu, which led to the Meiji Restoration, however, it is more likely that he passed away quietly of very old age in his small town and his passing was not documented outside of a small office, the records of which may no longer be extant (due to a flood or earthquake) - as the scroll seems to be no more than roughly 140 years old. We also have a painting by Wada-san of a plum branch on our website.

The final picture is the same signature on his dragon painting at Keio-ji Temple. Fair, normal condition for its age (ageing, toning, small tears, stains, wrinkles etc. - but very strong and still has great longevity ahead if cared for properly). Slightly larger size scroll. Very striking and impressive. The ancient, auspicious symbolism of pines in Buddhist culture is longevity, endurance (because they endure ice and snow) and steadfastness (because they stay green all year long).

Size: 26" x 74" - excellent lacquered jikusaki (roller ends) with a nice shine to them - old artisan style. Lovely, "crushed" asymmetrical pattern artisan hand-made washi paper with reflective mica pigments. *Shipped in an industrial-strength, re-capable tube, perfect for long-term storage.

All original scrolls come with a sealed document of authenticity.
