Description: Inspired by their mates in The Sex Pistols and The Clash, The Slits formed in 1976. Championed by John Peel they signed to Island records in 1978 with the line up ofAri Up (vocals)Viv Albertine (guitar)Tessa Pollitt (bass) and a newly recruited Budgie (drums). Budgie, of course, went on to become the powerhouse sticksman for Siouxsie and the Banshees but brought to the Slits a lightness of touch and a discipline that the girls had been searching for. Cut was produced Dennis Bovell who captured perfectly the dub reggae influences that were so much a part of the punk scene. Reggae was the only other anti establishment movement of the time and bass lines reverberated around Punks premiere club The Roxy and at every venue The Clash played at. DJ Don Letts being the defining link. It was The Slits 1978 tour with the Clash that helped the band establish their direction and Bovell pulled it all together in the studio.
