    桄榔为棕榈科的一种，产于中国南部，宋代周去非《岭外代答•桄榔》记：“其根皆细须，坚实如铁，旋以为器，悉成孔雀尾斑，世以为珍。”《本草纲目》卷三十一《集解》曰：“桄榔木岭南二广州郡皆有之，……其木似栟榈而坚硬，斫其内取面，大者至数石，食之不饥。……木性如竹，紫黑色有文而坚，工人解之，以制博弈局”。多生于密林中，纹理自然、色泽沉静，备受世人喜爱。清代文人崇尚自然，追慕无华。
