Description: The legendary pianist Dino Ciani was born in Rijeka, (now part of Croatia), in 1941. Following studies at the Conservatory in Rome, he attended the advanced courses of the great Alfred Cortot, who called him "miraculously gifted ... one of the most remarkable examples of the rarest talents one could hope to find". His career was launched when he won second prize at the Liszt-Bartók Competition in Budapest in 1961, and he went on to perform concerts in the most prestigious concert halls around Europe, working with the most illustrious conductors of the time. He is particularly remembered for his outstanding recording for Deutsche Grammophon of the complete Debussy Preludes. When this highly-talented young pianist was tragically killed in a road accident at the age of 33 in 1974, his premature death was mourned by the musicians around the world.

This rare Arts Archive issue features Ciani performing two of the Mozart's greatest piano concertos, the one in C major K503 and the D minor concerto K466. The conductor of the first of these is the great John Barbirolli, himself one of the musical legends of the period. It was recorded in Naples in January 1968.
