Description: The latest release in Winter & Winter's AudioFilm collection (a.k.a. Sound stories) is the true tale of one Emily Ruete - born as Sayyida Salme, Princess of Zanzibar and Oman - who was banished from her homeland by her brother the Sultan because of her forbidden romance with a German trader. Ruete's actual Memoirs were first published in 1886. According to local legend Taarab music was created by the Sultan, and the music is what Emily reminisces about as she sails away from Zanzibar. To recreate this sorry tale musically, the label has co-opted some of the finest talents in contemporary Taarab. Rajab Suleiman is a mainstay of the leading Zanzibari orchestra, the Culture Music Club, and performs here on five of the nine tracks with his new smaller ensemble Kithara. Kithara are the latest artists to feature in the acclaimed Zanzibara album series, as have the Mtendeni Maulid Ensemble, also included here. Label owner Stefan Winter provides the evocative soundscapes, as recorded in situ on Zanzibar.
