Albany, 1883 July 20. Governor Cleveland notifies
Bonnell & Valentine that the State Board of Health, asked by him
"to examine into
nuisances affecting the security of life and health in Long Island City, and in the Town of
Newtown, County of Queens", has found that
"the business carried on in and about the locality
aforesaid by the persons hereinabove named, to be a nuisance in this, to wit: that offensive gases,
vapors and odors, and deleterious matter, are allowed to escape into the atmosphere."
CLEVELAND declares the business to be a public nuisance and orders that
"within three
weeks from and after the service of a copy of this order, proper apparatus be constructed and put in
operation for the complete condensation or combustion of all vapors and gases generated in the
conduct of said business…." Lamont (1851-1905) was
President Grover Cleveland's
Secretary of War from 1893 to 1897. Lamont was also
his private secretary when
Cleveland was Governor of New York (1883-1885). Folds. Vertical fold touches "S" in
Lamont's signature. Slightly yellowed page over which service document rests. Fine 2½-inch
gold foil seal. One inch horizontal tear at middle fold. Fine condition.

Shipping - We ship via FedEx and USPS. Shipping charges for multiple orders are combined whenever possible.
