590nm – Extreme Colour IR filter. "The Goldie"
This filter
allows you to capture a large amount of colour as well as IR spectrum to
be captured in camera. This is popular with photographers shooting in
colour or converting to Black and White, which can be simply achieved by
desaturating the photo.
680nm – Amplified Colour IR filter.
This filter
will allow you to shoot more of the infrared light and retain some of
the visible light. The tones are a little more muted in comparison to
the 590nm filters. Similar to this filter, is popular for both colour
and monochromatic IR photos.
720nm – The Standard IR filter.
By standard, it
is by no means inadequate. Standard is the norm, the go to and the true
IR filter, allowing the user to capture all infrared light with a small
amount of visible light. This filter is fantastic for Monochromatic
photos or muted colour infrared photos.
760nm plus – The Black and White IR filter.
This
is where the visible light won’t reach your sensor and the camera will
only let infrared light in. This is the perfect filter for Monochrome
only and will render deep, rich black and white photos with little
post processing. These are for the purists of Infrared photography.
These filters are best used on a camera converted to IR or full-spectrum or you may
need long exposures and a tripod especially at the higher end of the IR
spectrum. With a converted camera, you can shoot handheld just as you
normally would.
Always shoot in "RAW" if you can as this gives you much more leeway when editing. They can be saved as JPEG or TIFF afterwards.
If
you are new to IR photography, you will need a photo editor in order to
properly white balance and colour swap the red and blue channels for
the desired colour balance effects and blue skies. I can fully recommend
"Raw Therapee" which is free and does everything. This is what I use
myself. Once you get the hang of it you will find it easy to use, and
there are plenty of tutorial videos online.
