A beautiful Italianate lady gazes inscrutably from a miniature gold picture frame locket. 

At the time it was fashionable to have your portrait painted in European style as a sign of worldliness and social calibre - she may well be a member of the British gentry or wealthy class. 

The painting is fabulously finely done, with shading and texture to her bright blue scarf and white blouse, mood to the sky and fabulous levels of detail throughout. Her rich, golden amber earrings are of typical Victorian style and her makeup gives her skin a delicate porcelain pallor. It almost gets better as you get closer - each brushstroke becomes clear, the care and attention to detail is evident. 

Behind a rounded glass panel, it's set into a gold-fronted yellow metal locket with extremely charmingly scrolled hinged stand to the back. 

It stands at a diminutive 48 x 41 mm and weighs in at 18.7 grams. Dating to around 1850/60, it's in lovely antique condition, with minimal wear/ageing and no loss or damage. A few spots of dirt have made their way under glass over the centuries.
