From the cover: “Formed on 1 April 1918 from the merger between the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps‚ the Royal Air Force was the first fully autonomous military air arm in the world. The new service suffered from budget cut-backs between the two world wars‚ but nonetheless evolved sound organisational and operational doctrines that were to stand it in good stead in the conflict ahead.
