From the cover: “This history is the first comprehensive account of a Regiment which has been in existence for 290 years and today is one of a handful that has not been disbanded‚ or amalgamated with another since the Infantry of the Line was reorganised in 1881. At that time the 33rd and 76th Regiments were amalgamated to form The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment.

The 33rd was raised at the outbreak of the war of the Spanish Succession in 1702. It soon established a reputation for excellence and by the 1770s was described as the best trained regiment in the Army. This was due to the influence of Lord Cornwallis who was Colonel of the Regiment from 1766-1805. Cornwallis was succeeded as Colonel by Arthur Wellesley‚ 1st Duke of Wellington‚ who joined the 33rd in 1793 and subsequently commanded it in the Netherlands and in India.

The 76th was raised in 1787 for service in India where it particularly distinguished itself in the wars against the Mahrattas‚ which led to the capture of Delhi and Agra. For its services it was awarded an honorary stand of colours an…
