                 was among the most important mapmakers of the eighteenth century. In 1721, at age 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy. In August 1741, he became the first IngĂ©nieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine (the French Hydrographic Office) and was named Official Hydrographer of the French King

Description: Display of the flags. Includes flags of the United States of America. Also includes scenes of naval warfare including the battle of July 27, 1778, between the French and English, the battles in 1778 between the Triton and the Warwick, and the battle between the Belle Poule and Arethusa at the Battle of Ushant. Also includes two diagrams of ships of the line, with items numbered for identification in keys, and a compass. The battle between the Belle-Poule and the HMS Arethusa on June 17, 1778, was notable because it marked the beginning of French intervention in the American War of Independence. This print is also known as the Mondhare Flag Sheet
