THE COMMODORE BALLROOM Vancouver Canada Vtg 1994 Blues For Christmas T Shirt LRG
This Is An Original Vintage Shirt, Not A Replica
COMMENTS: "Blues for Christmas" was a Commodore Ballroom (Nightclub) charity event to support the Vancouver Food Bank. It originated in the early 1980's when it was called "Jingle Bell Rock". Over the years, as shown on the back hit on this shirt, a great many musicians and entertainers volunteered their time to support the worthy cause. It was held shortly before Christmas in the nostalgic Commodore Ballroom. For myself it really helped to get me into the spirit. Every year had it's own unique memorable event. Entrance was by donation. One year in the early 90's someone brought a donation in a brown paper bag. Later when the bag was opened it contained $11,111.11. I'm not sure if they ever determined the donor or the significance of the amount. Blues For Christmas
ABOUT: THE COMMODORE BALLROOM Vancouver Canada
The Commodore Ballroom has been Vancouver Canada's top nightclub & concert venue since it opened in 1930. The 1,000-seat bar really came of age in the 1970s when visiting bands ranged from the Police, the Ramones, KISS, David Bowie, Tina Turner and Nirvana. The dance floor used to bounce because it was laid over a horsehair foundation. The horsehair was replaced during a renovation in the '90s but afterward some guests swore they could still feel the floor moving. The Commodore was named one of the Top 10 Most Influential Clubs in North America and the Most Influential Club in Canada by Billboard Magazine in 2011.
Since 1930 acts have includes The Dorsey Brothers, Count Basie, George Burns, Rudy Vallee, Stan Kenton, Cab Calloway and the Will Maston Trio that included the yet unknown Sammy Davis Jr. In addition there's been
The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie, B.B. King, Patti Smith, Blondie, Devo, Tom Petty, Nirvana, The Clash, the Pixies, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Roger Daltrey, Snoop Dogg, Franz Ferdinand etc etc. The list is endless as indicated by the following number of annual fan posts to concertarchives dot org. "2023=138 concerts 2022=155 concerts 2021=11 concerts 2020=39 concerts 2019=121 concerts 2018=110 concerts 2017=123 concerts 2016=140 concerts 2015=124 concerts 2014=116 concerts 2013=128 concerts 2012=140 concerts 2011=121 concerts 2010=125 concerts 2009=177 concerts 2008=150 concerts 2007=148 concerts 2006=145 concerts 2005=153 concerts 2004=130 concerts 2003=88 concerts 2002=67 concerts 2001=81 concerts 2000=45 concerts etc.
Another contribution by the club and it's long time owner Drew Burns were the countless charity events for groups like the Vancouver Food Bank and the Variety Club. I personally enjoyed being part of that volunteer staging team. The backstage area was small with no frills. The stars mingled like it was a house party. A personal memory was a "Blues for Christmas" Food Bank event. I was onstage helping Long John Baldry and Kathy McDonald. They burst into "You've Lost That Lovin" Feeling" and I was so enraptured by the duet I forgot to leave the stage. they sang that so well I don't think anyone even noticed me. Working a Commodore charity event for Drew Burns was an honor.
