"Taylor & Skinner's Survey of the Roads of Scotland on An Improved Plan. To which is prefixed an Accurate Map of Scotland with the New Roads, &c. &c. since the survey was taken. Edinburgh; Published by Thos. Brown"

The first road atlas of Scotland was published in 1776 by Taylor & Skinner, in a long format, usually with leather covers that allowed it to be rolled up and carried in a saddle bag. This new, improved edition of the maps was first published in 1790 by Thomas Brown, in book format, which was a lot more practical for using on travels, and is indeed easier for consulting now.

The 'accurate Map of Scotland' is often missing from the book, and is here supplied separately, mounted on linen, in folding map format. It is titled "A New Accurate Travelling Map of Scotland, with the Distances marked between each Stage in Measured Miles. Published according to Act of Parliament by Thomas Brown, Bookseller, Edinburgh, and John Brown, Pocketbook Maker, Glasgow. McIntyre sculp. Edin." The border handcolour is original. This is the early version of the map - a later version was issued with mountains, etc. added.

Both these items are very scarce, and although foxed and marked, they are in a very acceptable condition, the atlas in a new rebind with leather spine and marbled paper.

Size: the map unfolded measures approx. 56cms x 46cms. The atlas covers measure approx. 18.5cms x 11cms. 176 pages, plus a fold-out chart and 8 pages index.
Condition: The map is mounted on linen. A little shaky along the folds, and with three holes within the folds. The sheet is browned with age, and a little worn and marked but acceptable. With original handcolouring. The Atlas itself is complete on 176 pages, plus a fold-out plate, and 8 pages of index. The pages are somewhat foxed, as seen in the photos, and the fold-out plate with wear, but again all acceptable, in a neat rebind with new marbled covers, leather spine and new endpapers. Please study the photographs.
