Netsuke Owl Japanese Boxwood carved vintage inro Ojime Ornament Size H50mm
*Condition
Very good condition.
A ”netsuke” is a fastener that was used by samurai and merchants in the old days to prevent slippage when they hung drawers, cigarette cases, inro, etc. on their obis. In the kimono life without pockets, when carrying small items or valuables, they would put them in bags called "chojimono" and hang them from the obi using netsuke. In this sense, it was a practical item, but it gradually became more and more elaborately crafted and carved, and is thought to have become more like an ornament or accessory for sophisticated men. The designs and motifs of netsuke can be combined with the designs of bags and inro to create a playful and twisted look. Netsuke, which started out as mere tools, evolved at an accelerated pace, and eventually reached the level of arts and crafts.
