Ukiyoe artist of the late Edo period, known for his masterpiece The Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido.
         Born into a family of firefighters, he became an ukiyoe artist after succeeding to the family headship.
         His bold compositions and beautiful colors, known as Hiroshige blue, made his works of Japanese landscapes familiar and rich in sentiment very popular.
         He also influenced European painters such as Van Gogh and Monet.
