Hotel Reserve (1944)
Spy Film
Starring James Mason, Lucie Mannheim, Raymond Lovell
Spy film starring James Mason as an innocent man caught up in pre-Second World War espionage.
It was based on Eric Ambler's novel Epitaph for a Spy.
Unusually, it was both directed and produced by a trio: Lance Comfort, Mutz Greenbaum (credited as Max Greene) and Victor Hanbury.
Wrongly accused of espionage after a photo lab technician and a French secret agent (Julien Mitchell) discover incriminating surveillance photos on his camera, Peter Vadassy (James Mason), an Austrian medical student on holiday on the French Riviera, returns to his room at the Hotel Reserve. Under threat of deportation, Vadassy launches an investigation into his fellow guests and struggles to unmask the spy who framed him in a place where suspicions abound and trust is a luxury he can't afford.
