During the 1980s and early 1990s I traveled up and down the East Coast meeting my favorite players for autographs (Micky Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Sandy Koufax, Seaver, Duke Snyder and so many more). I will slowly but surely will be posting some of my collection. I’ll start with this one.

***Absolutely will pass any certification*** (I got all of the autographs myself. This one was at a bookstore signing in New York City in 1991).

Great story (I always tried to take some time to speak with them). I asked Mickey if he ever heard “the Al Kaline story.”

He put down his pen and said, ”Tell me.”

I then told him, “In the mid 1960s a young fan approached Al Kaline and said, ‘You’re not half half the player Mickey Mantle is.’ Al Kaline looked at the boy and said, “Son, no one is half the player Mickey Mantle is.”

Mickey as humble as ever, looked at me and said, “Al was a better player than me.”

I’ll never forget that interaction. I hope someone will enjoy this piece.
