A tiny and masterfully carved natural shell cameo depicting the mythical Gorgon, Medusa.

A symbol of feminism and the power of women, Medusa’s power endured beyond death and she is one of the strongest symbols to remain in common culture from the times of the Greek myths.

She's beautifully finely hand carved from a single piece of bull's mouth shell, with wonderfully deep relief incorporating classical artistry and forced perspective, and the way the light moves across her face is simply enchanting. She has closed eyes, wings to her head and snakes to her head and neck, and the subject as a whole is focused by the excellent use of space around her, bolstered by the simplicity of the mount.

This mount is a high quality, solid 14 carat gold stepped frame with minimal bezel, for wear as a brooch or a pendant, with a gold safety chain.

Dating from around 1860, it weighs 5.8 grams and is a wonderfully small size at 28 x 23 mm, excluding rings. It's in excellent condition with minimal wear and no loss or damage.
