The Cotton Club was a legendary New York City nightclub from 1923 to 1940. It was originally located on 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem from 1923 to1936, before moving to the midtown Theater District from1936 to 1940. The club operated during the Jim Crow era so it was a "white-only" club for many years, although most of the entertainers that performed at the Cotton Club were black. The Cotton Club opened its doors to Black patrons starting in 1935. After the race-riots of that same year, the Cotton Club was temporarily closed but reopened in Midtown Theater District where it remained until closing for good in 1940. The Cotton Club remains an iconic institution because of the performers that played there regularly.
