Description
Outstanding antique French bronze 3-piece writing set by the sculptor Maurice Frecourt. Circa 1900s. Comprising of a letter opener, vide poche trinket dish and wax seal. The wax seal bearing matrix of initials S and what appears to be a stylized D or R. The set is beautifully modeled with a motif of a duck and casted from solid bronze. Each piece is signed Frécourt and stamped Bronze. The set is in overall good condition with general wear commensurate with age and use. Housed in the original presentation box.
Dimensions:
Wax seal measures 3 3/8" height with a matrix measuring 3/4" diameter. The trinket dish measures 6 7/8" x 2" x 7/8" height. Letter opener is 9 3/4" length. Presentation box measures 11 1/2" x 6 3/4" x 1 1/2" height.
Fabulous collectible antique with signature indicating the French sculptor Maurice Frecourt (1890-1961). Maurice Frecourt was an in important artist during the art deco period specializing in Animalier sculpture. He was born in Charenton in 1890. A pupil of Charles Valton, Antonin Mercié and Jean Boucher at the Beaux-Arts. He became well known after his work was exhibited from 1920 at Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. His sculptures often included office accessories / bureau decor. His work has been compared to sculptures from Louis Carvin and Max Le Verrier.
