AL CAPP - PRINTED ART SIGNED IN PENCIL - HFSID 179862

AL CAPP
Large 39½x20¼ printed and numbered illustration on cloth of Sadie Hawkins Day madness, signed by Li'l Abner creator Al Capp in 1974
Printed art signed "Al Capp '74" in pencil. With pencil notations near left edge in unknown hand: "A.P./21/30". Pencil notations on verso, also in unknown hand. Color, 39½x20¼ overall, 34½x10¼ image, one surface, cloth mounted on cardstock. ©1975 Alfred G. Capp (stamped on verso in black ink). Sadie Hawkins Day premiered in Li'l Abner on Nov. 15, 1937. The story goes that Sadie Hawkins got tired of waiting for suitors to come a-courting, so one day her father decreed the first annual Sadie Hawkins Day, a race where the unmarried women of Dogpatch can marry any bachelors unlucky enough to be caught. Sadie Hawkins Day caught on like wildfire in dry brush, spawning its own dance the Sadie Hawkins Dance, where the women asks the man to dance instead of the other way around, and hundreds of Sadie Hawkins Day celebrations around the United States (none of them, hopefully, as chaotic as Sadie Hawkins Day in Dogpatch, USA), and Capp made it an annual event in Li'l Abner every November. Capp (1909-1979, born Alfred Gerald Capin in New Haven, Connecticut) lost his right leg in a trolley accident at the age of nine and spent five years in high school without receiving a diploma, yet went on to create one of America's most-loved, and certainly longest-running, comic strip, Li'l Abner. He started out drawing Mister Gilfeather, a one-panel cartoon in New York City that he reportedly hated. He met Ham Fisher in 1933 and worked with him on Joe Palooka before beginning the cartoon that he'd become known for: Li'l Abner, which first appeared in The New York Mirror in 1934. Li'l Abner, which ran until Al Capp's retirement in 1977, detailed the exploits of the rustic inhabitants of Dogpatch, USA and spawned, among other things, a Broadway musical that ran 693 performances from 1956 to 1958, a 1959 film with an Oscar-nominated score, a theme park in Marble Falls, Arkansas called Dogpatch USA (now closed) and the Sadie Hawkins dance, after a fictional Dogpatch holiday called Sadie Hawkins Day. Lightly toned, stained, soiled, creased and bowed, otherwise in fine condition.
