QUEEN ELIZABETH II

Golden Jubilee Collection

FIJI

Gorious music is one of the great features

of the Coronation and, like the sacred ritual and ceremony, has origins in Saxon days. The famous anthem Zadok the Priest was sung when Edgar was crowned King at Bath in 973; and it has been sung during the Anointing ceremony of every Coronation since, though now superseded by the version written by Handel for the crowning of George Il in 1727.

The responsibility for arranging the coronation music falls to the Archbishop of Canterbury, who appoints a Director of Music, traditionally the organist of the Abbey, and he in turn is assisted by the Master of the Queen's Music. At the Queen's Coronation the beautiful anthems and hymns were arranged by Sir William Walton and sung by the massed choirs of Westminster Abbey, the Chapel Royal and St George's Chapel, Windsor, accompanied by musicians from leading national orchestras and heart-stirring fanfares sounded by the trumpeters of the Military School of Music.

Apart from the twelve year old Edward V

and the uncrowned Edward VIll, every

British monarch since William the Conqueror has been crowned at Westminster Abbey and understandably the Abbey's organists have always had a strong influence on the music chosen for the Coronation service.

Henry Purcell, for instance, became organist in 1680 and composed the music for the coronations of William and Mary and Queen Anne, including the Te Deum which concluded the Queen's Coronation in 1953.

The choir singing at the Queen’s Coronation in Westminster Abbey and the Queen's role as Defender of the Faith are the chosen themes for the two Golden Jubilee coins from Fiji. Linking the two, a small crucifix, representative of the faith defended by the Queen, is found to the right of the choristers on the 'Choir' coin and is echoed in the cloth draping the sword on the 'Defender' Coin.
