This is an original press photo. Vatican City, Rome, Italy. High dignitaries at the Vatican have privately expressed fear that Pope Pius XI is nearing the end of his reign. Stricken with paralysis in his legs and suffering from respiratory complications which make his breathing hourly more difficult, the aged pontiff took a turn for the worse last night, December 5. His personal physicians and aides - numbering half a dozen medical experts - were at his bedside in continuous consultation. This portrait study of the Pope was made at his Vatican office May 27, 1929. Photo measures 5 x 7.25 inches. Photo is dated 05-27-1929.
