This is the three-volume Index (only) to The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion (1861-1865). The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion was originally printed in 1870-1888, by the government Printing Office. It was prepared in accordance with the Acts of Congress, under the direction of the Surgeon General Joseph K. Barnes, United States Army. It is a compilation of surgeons’ and medical officers’ battle, field and autopsy reports; vital information regarding hospitals (permanent and field) from construction to conditions; also covers ambulances and medical supplies; and contains copious statistic on casualties and charts pertaining to injuries, disease, and wounds. It includes casualty list and injuries noted. The set was not just medical, but also contains battle accounts, first-hand narratives, regimental information – Union and Confederate. For example, it had over 1400 North Carolina Confederate soldiers listed. The Medical and Surgical History is to Civil War medicine what the Army Official Records is to the Campaigns.
