Circa 1931- Metallic marble colour pattern / quality pen.

A beautiful early pattern Conway Stewart "Dinkie" MAJOR, model No 640 fountain pen, circa 1931, in super technical & cosmetic condition for age. This pattern is hard to find and often discoloured by ink volatiles when you do.

Note that the "Dinkie" MAJOR is larger than the standard "‘Dinkie". The last photo in this listing shows a classic "Dinkie"  alongside the "Dinkie" MAJOR, to give you a clear idea of the size difference. Please note that the standard "Dinkie" you see in that photo is NOT part of this auction.

See Andy Russell, ’50 Years of the Dinkie 1922 to 1972’,  published by Shelley & Peacock, Marlow, U.K. (2018), ISBN: 978-0-9563444-3-4, page 33, third pen from left for model and page 88 for the marble colour pattern (MA-31-40-01). Note that the green &brown colours in the pen on sale here have an eye-catching metallic iridescence, unlike the flat colours of the earlier versions of the pattern.

10cm long capped and 12.3cm long with cap posted (not including ring).

14K gold Broad nib (approx 1mm line) imprinted as follows:

Conway

Stewart

14ct GOLD

Makers imprint on barrel as follows:

“DINKIE” MAJOR

Conway Stewart London

With --- MADE IN ENGLAND ---  at right angles to side.

The imprint is as crisp and clear as the day it was put there. No exaggeration. Excellent.

This pen was originally sold as you see it, without a cap clip, as were the majority of early  Dinkies. Clips were certainly added to these pens subsequently (it’s easy to do) by retailers (for a price)or by later owners / collectors, probably to stop the pen rolling off desk-tops, but that’s beside the point. This pen is not ‘missing’ anything.

No disfiguring scratches. No bite-marks, no cracks. Cap and barrel threads are fine. New silicone ink-sac fitted. Lever action fine. No personalization. No crazing of (casein) pen surface.

This pen is a classic of ever increasing scarcity and value, not least because of terminally unhappy attempts to clean / loosen parts by soaking in water. Don’t do it.
