Antique Bronze Benedict Athenic Cameo Box 1445
In 1916, M.S. Benedict Art Studios in Syracuse, New York, founded in the late 1800s, introduced a new range of products called Athenic Bronze Goods for Stationers, designed to be sold as gifts. This beautiful bronze hinged box was one of those products. The range aesthetics were inspired by the classic features of Greek Athenian art interpreted with French bronze finish items shaped in subtle Greek proportions. The old ivory color of the cameo forms a striking color contrast. The box is substantial, weighing nearly 1 1/2 pounds. It is well marked with the round Benedict Athenic Bronze mark and the model number 1445 stamped into the exterior bottom.
Box still has the original fabric inside and the pin/hinge work perfectly. Box does show wear - it's 100 years old.
