Note on the artist:
Jacques François Joseph Swebach known as Desfontaines (1760-1823)
He was a student of his father then of Michel Hamon-Duplessis.
Painter, designer, engraver.
He began exhibiting at the age of 14.
He entered the Salon in 1791 and received the 2nd grand prize.
In 1810 he received the great medal from the same Paris Salon.
Swebach was appointed first painter of the Sèvres factory from 1802 to 1813.
His name is definitively associated with the first Empire, its history and its style.
After the Empire in 1814, he left for Russia where the Tsar offered him management of the imperial porcelain factory.
The climate proved bad for his health, he returned to France and died there at the age of 54.
He was a specialist in horses and military scenes.
