About the Artist
HENRY G. GASTINEAU (1791-1876)
He was an English artist of Huguenot descent. He studied at the Royal Academy, beginning work as an engraver. He then turned to painting in oils. He then transferred to painting in watercolour. In 1812 he first exhibited at the Royal Academy. His favourite subject was coastal scenery. In 1821 he was admitted to the Society of Painters in Water Colours (The Old Society of Painters in Water Colours) as an Associate, becoming a full member in 1823. He continued to exhibit every year for 58 years. When he was 85, he exhibited 11 pictures.
He was a contemporary of David Cox, Copley Fielding, George Cattermole and Samuel Prout. He painted in ‘the old manner’ of water colour painting using the transparency of the medium to great effect. He taught both privately and at several schools.
Beyond his painting, while a young man, he built his won house, Norfolk lodge, in Cold Harbour Lane, Camberwell where he lived until his death in 1876. He was buried at West Norwood Cemetery along with Coc, Cattermole and Prout.
He was prolific and, I sense, preferred painting in Wales, particularly North Wales. His works were used to make steel engravings which illustrated books such as The Beauties of England and Wales and Wales Illustrated.

About the Engraver

H.G. Watkins (fl 1830)

As far as I can find out, H.G. Watkins came from Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire (now Powis) in central Wales. He is said to have flourished in around 1830.

Note about Condition
This engraving is more than 190 years old. The paper is dicoloured where it was Bound into the book. This is probably caused by the treatment given to the cotton which was used to sew the binding. Paper at the opening edge and the top is also likely to be discoloured because it has been exposed to the smoke and dust caused by coal fires and general dust. Many old book cases had leather ‘pelmets hanging from the front edge of shelves to reduce the amount of dust on the shelf below.
Sometimes you may see engravings in very white paper. I think this is due to the use of chlorine-based cleaning agents which I believe tend to reduce the life of the paper.
With this engraving, you can rest assured that it has not been ‘tampered with.
Presentation
The classic way to present engravings is to mount them behind a pale ivory mount which allows for equal widths at top and side and a bottom width which is wider. Common measurements are 50mm or 75mm for top and side and 75mm or 100mm for the bottom.
I think the mount's aperture should be cut just outboard of the border line to let the bevel cut do the work of guiding the eye.
The title is very effective if shown in an aperture beneath.
The classic frame is a Hogarth moulding in black and gold.
Measurements
The approximate measurements given are those of the height and width of the plate impression or the border line given in millimetres and imperial, height before width.
