About the Artist
HENRY G. GASTINEAU (1791-1876)
He was an English artist of Huguenot descent. He studied at
the Royal Academy, beginning work as an engraver. He then turned to painting in
oils. He then transferred to painting in watercolour. In 1812 he first
exhibited at the Royal Academy. His favourite subject was coastal scenery. In
1821 he was admitted to the Society of Painters in Water Colours (The Old
Society of Painters in Water Colours) as an Associate, becoming a full member
in 1823. He continued to exhibit every year for 58 years. When he was 85, he
exhibited 11 pictures.
He was a contemporary of David Cox, Copley Fielding, George
Cattermole and Samuel Prout. He painted in ‘the old manner’ of water colour
painting using the transparency of the medium to great effect. He taught both
privately and at several schools.
Beyond his painting, while a young man, he built his won
house, Norfolk lodge, in Cold Harbour Lane, Camberwell where he lived until his
death in 1876. He was buried at West Norwood Cemetery along with Coc,
Cattermole and Prout.
He was prolific and, I sense, preferred painting in Wales, particularly
North Wales. His works were used to make steel engravings which illustrated
books such as The Beauties of England and Wales and Wales Illustrated.

SHIPPING - The shipping costs INCLUDE
INSURANCE.
Whilst if the picture is framed, it is likely that the frame is not perfect but
may be acceptable to you.
If present, the frame is NOT OFFERED as part of this
item.
I would suggest that this is an opportunity to have the picture re-mounted and
framed to compliment the room in which you wish to hang it to optimise on its
effect.
Make the most of your art!
Please tell me if you would like the fame and I will send an invoice to include
it in the shipping.
That being said, I can't insure for damage to the glass or frame.
Usually, If I buy a framed picture at auction, I would expect to have to pay
around £50 to someone like Mail Boxes Etc for shipping, but that includes
collection, packing and shipping.
Frequently the cost of shipping is nearly as much as the picture itself, but
does include a margin for commercial profit.
I do not aim to make a profit on the shipping costs.
