Vintage French silver and 18K gold ladies compact mirror. Crafted from .800 silver, the compact features an 18K yellow gold overlay and clasp. Circa 1950. Beautifully engraved with a wonderful pastoral scene reminiscent of the romantic Rococo paintings by Fragonard and Boucher. Depicting courtiers and a musician outside a chateau or castle. Charming engraved details to the lush gardens surrounding the figures emphasized in 18K gold overlay. The castle windows decorated with 10 inset blue sapphires. The compact sides and base embellished with intricate guilloche engraving. To the front is a push button clasp done in gold decorated with 6 channel set square cut rubies. Flush hinge to the back. Opening to reveal a beveled glass mirror and powder well, compete with original sifter screen together with a swans down powder puff. Measures 3" square x 3/8" height. In overall good vintage condition with general wear commensurate with use and age. The interior is thoroughly hallmarked with the French head of the wild boar. On the lid behind the mirror is the conjoined boar and eagle head. From 1829, items made of both gold and silver were stamped with a conjoined boar’s and eagle’s head, indicating a composition of 18K gold and silver of a minimum finesse of .800/1000. Also bearing a silversmith's mark. Crafted and retailed at Clerc jewelers. Located at 4 Place de l'Opéra in Paris, the renown jewelry boutique was first operated by the Parisian jeweler Charles Rémy Clerc, founder of the brand known for their outstanding handmade watches. Originating in Geneva, Switzerland in 1874, the company operated in the Place de l'Opéra and Boulevard des Capucines (Convent of the Capuchins in the Place Vendome Boulevard), in addition to crafting watches, the firm also dealt in gems and jewelry.
