A Captain of the Edinburgh Military Artillery, Colin,
Scott Moncrieff, first introduced the idea of a
disappearing gun to the British Government in
1858. He had successfully produced a design that
overcame many shortcomings inherent in existing
methods of mounting guns. The most significant
feature of his revolutionary method was that it
afforded greater protection to the crew manning
the gun and to the gun itself.
