ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET, LOUIS FRANCIS ALBERT VICTOR NICHOLAS MOUNTBATTEN, 1ST EARL MOUNTBATTEN OF BURMA (1900-1979), WAS BORN PRINCE LOUIS OF BATTENBERG, BUT HAD HIS NAME CHANGED ALONG WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY WHEN ANTI-GERMAN SENTIMENT WAS HIGH DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR.

MOUNTBATTEN WAS A BRITISH NAVAL OFFICER AND STATESMAN. HE WAS AN UNCLE OF PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH, AND A SECOND COUSIN ONCE REMOVED OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II.

DURING WWII , HE WAS SUPREME ALLIED COMMANDER, SOUTH EAST ASIA COMMAND FROM 1943-1946. HE WAS ALSO THE LAST BRITISH VICEROY OF INDIA, AND THE FIRST GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF INDEPENDENT INDIA.

FROM 1954 TO 1959 HE WAS FIRST SEA LORD, A POSITION THAT HAD BEEN HELD BY HIS FATHER. HE LATER SERVED AS CHIEF OF THE DEFENCE STAFF UNTIL 1965, MAKING HIM THE LONGEST SERVING PROFESSIONAL HEAD OF THE BRITISH ARMED FORCES OF THE TIME. HE ALSO SERVED AS CHAIRMAN OF THE NATO MILITARY COMMITTEE.

IN 1979, MOUNTBATTEN, HIS GRANDSON NICHOLAS, AND TWO OTHERS WERE ASSASSINATED BY THE IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY (IRA), WHEN A BOMB EXPLODED ON HIS FISHING BOAT, IN COUNTY SLIGO, IRELAND.
