L’auteur a vécu auprès de héros simples leur vie de gaieté, d’angoisse et de sacrifices. Il évoque, pour les faire connaître, les souvenirs du groupe aérien d’observation dont il a fait partie en 1914 et en 1940.
Pilote en mars 1918, Pierre Mariage termine la Première Guerre mondiale avec 4 citations. Il reprend du service en 1939 et participe à la campagne de France. En mai 1940, il prend le commandement du Groupe Aérien d’Observation GAO 3/581. Il intègre les Forces françaises combattantes et rejoint la R.A.F.
