Life and work: Stamminger attended the Latin school in Würzburg from 1845 and the grammar school from 1850-54. From autumn 1854 to 1859 he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Würzburg and was ordained a priest in the spring of 1859. He spent his chaplaincy first in Ebern and from the age of 20. July 1859 in the parish of St. Burkard in Würzburg.

University librarian: At the instigation of the chief librarian, he entered the university library as an intern in 1862, while retaining the position of chaplain. February 1864 chaplain of the military hospital at Marienberg Fortress. At 13th. On September 18, 1866 he was appointed librarian at the university library. In the years that followed he was also active as a preacher and in pastoral care. He took a keen interest in the activities of the Catholic association, especially in the social endeavors, and also made a name for himself as a patron of church art.

Political career: In the political field he developed a self-sacrificing activity; from the late 1960s to 1877 and again from 1882 he was the leader of the Catholics in Lower Franconia and between 1885 and 1886 a member of the Bavarian state parliament. In 1868 the “Lower Franconian Windthorst” founded the Fränkisches Volksblatt, which was initially close to the so-called Patriot Party. [1]

Literary works: In the years 1862-66 and 1869 Stamminger published the magazine "Chilianeum, leaves for Catholic science, art and life" (1.-8. vol., Würzburg 1862-66; New episode 1. and 2. vol., 1869). 1877-85 3rd-6th Volume of "Catholic Studies"; 1879-84 he was editor of the "literary review for the catholic Germany" (5.-10. year).

Unfortunately, his two large-scale major works remained unfinished:

"Franconia sancta. The Lives of the Saints and Blesseds of Franconia", Volume I (Würzburg 1878-81)

"Franconia Sacra. History and Description of the Diocese of Würzburg". Edited in conjunction with the Diocesan Clergy by JB Stamminger. 1.

"A true nobleman". Memorial speech to His Excellency Georg Eugen Heinrich Karl Arbogast Freiherr von und zu Franckenstein" (Würzburg 1890).

"In memory of Cardinal Hergenröther" (Freiburg i. Br. 1892).

Stamminger wrote a series of church-historical and biographical articles for the 2nd Edition of the Church Lexicon by Wetzer and Welte.

Legacy: His special scientific field of study, in which he had also collected a valuable private library bequeathed to the Diocese of Würzburg in his will, was the church history of Franconia.
