A magnificent title page from the Atlas Maritime, with the imprint "Romanus de Hooghe, JUD et Com.Reg. tab: hanc suis(?) D.dedit  auct. et inv. 1693."
From the Dutch version, issued by de Hooghe, of Alexis Jaillot's lavish Atlas Le Neptune Francois. Engraved in Amsterdam by Pierre Mortier.

The scene depicted is full of classical references: Atlas carrying the Sky on his shoulders at the top, Aeneas (top left?), Ullysses (in the boat by the sunrise/sunset?), Triton brewing up a storm bottom right, Scylla with her fearsome dogs together with a Siren at the bottom centre, all referred to in the Latin poem.
In addition, there are globes, surveying instruments (one in the hands of a female),  and an Atlas displaying a map with a compass beside it. A fine image of 17th cartography.

I hope my photos bring out the richness of the handcolouring. The golds are of course striking, but so too the deep purples and turquoises. I don't think you could find a finer example.
