Edmond Rostand, born April 1, 1868 in Marseille and died December 2, 1918 in Paris,
is a French writer, playwright, poet and essayist.

He is the author of one of the most famous plays in French theater, Cyrano de Bergerac
and is the husband of the poetess Rosemonde Gérard and the father of the writer,
French biologist and academician Jean Rostand.

Biography

Edmond Eugène Joseph Alexis Rostand was born in April 1868 in Marseille at no 14 rue Monteaux
(now rue Edmond-Rostand. Coming from a bourgeois trading and banking family, he is the son of economist Eugène Rostand and Angèle Gayet (daughter of a rich chemical manufacturer),
and the great-grandson of Alexis-Joseph Rostand, a mayor of Marseille.

In 1880, his father took his whole family, Edmond, his mother and his two cousins, to the spa
in Vogue in Bagnères-de-Luchon. First accommodated in the “chalet Spont”, then in the “villa Devalz”, they then had the “villa Julia” built, near the casino. Edmond Rostand spent more than twenty-two summers in Luchon, which inspired his first works. He notably wrote a play in 1888, Le Gant rouge, and above all a volume of poetry in 1890, Les Musardises. It is in this spa and tourist resort
that Edmond Rostand befriended a Luchon man of letters,
Henry de Gorsse, with whom he shared the taste for literature.

From the age of 10 to 17, he studied at the Lycée Thiers. He accumulated prizes and accessit there, being particularly noted in French composition, history and Latin. He went to Paris in 1884 to complete them at the Stanislas college for two years. He wrote an unpublished play, Les Petites Manies and a short story in prose,
My La Bruyère. Armed with his baccalaureate, his father directed him to the law school because he wanted
make him a diplomat. He passes his license, then registers at the bar without practicing there, before deciding
to devote himself to poetry.

In 1887, he presented to the Academy of Marseille an essay on "two novelists of Provence",
Honoré d'Urfé and Émile Zola, who won the Marshal de Villars prize.

On April 1, 1888, he founded with his friend Maurice Frître, a Parisian journalist,
the “Club des natifs du 1er avril”, whose statutes stipulate that its members will enjoy the privilege of entering free of charge in all public establishments, opera houses, theaters, racetracks and brothels, of being able to laugh at funerals in order to make them less sinister, to benefit from the sponsorship of the Head of State at birth and, in addition, to be allocated a staff apartment in one of the National Palaces, a residence equipped with all the desirable comforts and a JEUNE domestic service , accorte and complacent.

In August 1888, with his friend Maurice Frître, they went to the Moustajon racetrack and decorated there
their crew of an abundance of wildflowers. They cause a sensation in front of a fashionable establishment,
the Café Arnative, and improvise on the terrace a joyous flower battle with their friends.
This is how the first "Flower Corso" was born, or the Battle of Flowers in Luchon, which became the Flower Festival,
traditionally taking place on the last Sunday in August. The winner was given a banner.

On the train to Montréjeau, her father meets Madame Lee and her daughter Rosemonde Gérard (also a poet, of whom Leconte de Lisle was the godfather, and Alexandre Dumas the tutor) and invites them to
have tea at Villa Julia. On April 8, 1890, Edmond married
Rosemonde in the Church Saint-Augustin de Paris.

Rosemonde and Edmond Rostand will have two sons: Maurice, born in 1891, and Jean, born in 1894.

Edmond left Rosemonde in 1915 for his last love, actress Mary Marquet.

Edmond Rostand obtains his first successes in 1894 with Les Romanesques, piece in verse presented
at the Comédie-Française and in 1897 with the play La Samaritaine, but posterity will especially remember
the success of Cyrano de Bergerac, who triumphed in the premiere in 1897, when he was only 29 years old.
In 1900, he had a new success with L'Aiglon. Badly recovered from pleurisy after the first performance of this piece, he left, a few months later, to recover in Cambo-les-Bains. Seduced by the place, he acquired land on which he built his residence, the Villa Arnaga. In the 1910s, he collaborated with La Bonne Chanson, Revue du foyer, literary and musical, directed by Théodore Botrel.

For several years, he worked irregularly on the piece Chantecler, which premiered on February 7, 1910. After his relative critical failure, Rostand no longer plays new plays.
From 1914, he was heavily involved in supporting French soldiers.

He died on December 2, 1918 in Paris, at 4 avenue de La Bourdonnais, of the Spanish flu,
possibly contracted during the rehearsals of a cover of L'Aiglon.

He is buried in Saint-Pierre cemetery in Marseille, his birthplace.
