Manuscript TECKLENBURG 1699-1714: account book merchant JB MESE / MEESE

You are bidding on a large format handwritten account book out Tecklenburg.

Format: 32.3 x 20 x 5.8 cm (vellum cover). -- Weight: 1.785kg.

Guided 1699-1714 from the Merchant Johann Berent Mese (Johann Berend Meese) in Tecklenburg.

In the front area are 14 pages from the years 1637-1649 available (mentioned is "der Kramersohn tho teckelenborch"); the merchant Mese used an older accounting book that was kept very sporadically, possibly from one of his ancestors.

Trading is done with, among other things Brandy, wine, tobacco, white bread, salt, sugar, linen, oil, raisins, rye bread... It's also partly about money.

At the end some interesting entries from 1701-04 on feeding soldiers ("Schloss-Soldaten", i.e. the soldiers who guarded Tecklenburg Castle), each signed "JB Mese", one with the full name "Joan Berent Mese."

The merchant's name also appears on some of the enclosed receipts. One comes from a widow "Meese", possibly the mother?

Scope: after approx. 100 written pages are followed by 264 blank pages; at the end another seven written pages and after another 38 empty pages another 7 written pages. -- So there are approx. 145 pages written, or. approx. 30% of the book.

Loose enclosed 20 receipts.

Condition: Binding stained and severely damaged, half detached from the cover at the front. Joint broken in front. The first leaves are badly damaged, some loosely enclosed (although there is only a kind of index by another hand). After that, the binding is strong and the leaves are intact. Strong paper somewhat stained throughout, rare small traces of worm damage.. BPlease note also the pictures at the end of the item description!
